Sam Ugly donates Ugly guitar to the brewery

When we decided to immortalize Toronto Punk sensations The Ugly with our Brewdog collaboration, we were not sure if any of them were still around. And so it was a big surprise when Sam Ugly (better known, we found out, as Sam Ferrara) walked into the brewery and asked what this beer was all about. He was thrilled and regaled us with stories about his time with the Ugly and offered to speak at the official launch. We couldn’t have been happier with his willingness to participate. But what took it over the top was Sam’s offer to donate his partially burnt and broken Ugly bass, marked up with the official band members names. This bass had been in storage since a fire made it unplayable decades ago. Sam was kind enough to come present the instrument to us and now it hangs proudly on our tap room wall. Sam has had an amazing career in music and still plays the around town from time to time. You might catch him as part of the John Borra duo at Communist’s Daughter, or at one of his art shows.

Here is a clip of Sam from a recent performance. And another from a few decades earlier.
